Faker is a band formed in Sydney in 1996 by Andrew Day (drums), Chris Deal (guitar), Nathan Hudson (vocals/guitar/piano), and Paul Youdell (bass). They were later joined by keyboardist Marco Fraietta (aka Marco2000). The band spent five years playing around Sydney before releasing their debut EP Sound Out Loud in March 2001.
Marco2000 left in 2000, and the band continued without a keyboardist. The track "Teenage Werewolf" got heavy airplay on Triple J and became a fan favorite. Another single, "Kids on Overload," was released in October 2001. Paul Berryman (formerly of The Superjesus) replaced Day on drums in late 2003 — a point Hudson described as the band’s “true beginning.”
Faker’s first album, Addicted Romantic, came out in June 2005 after they signed with Capitol Records. It was produced by Lindsay Gravina and tackled themes like casual sex and confusion. Just before the album’s release, Youdell and guitarist Jonathan Wilson left, replaced by Nicholas Munnings (bass) and Stefan Gregory (guitar). A lead-in EP, The Familiar / Enough, was released in May.
The album peaked at #44 on the ARIA Charts. Three singles were released: "The Familiar" (#62), "Hurricane" (#65 and #21 in Triple J’s Hottest 100 of 2005), and "Love for Sale." After more lineup changes, Lucio Pedrazzi joined on drums in 2008.
Their second album, Be the Twilight, came out in November 2007 and peaked at #24. The hit single "This Heart Attack" reached #9 on the ARIA Charts and #5 on Triple J’s Hottest 100 of 2007. The band wrote 45 songs before narrowing them down to 12, recording in Los Angeles with producer Paul Fox.
The album received strong reviews, with Triple J and Webcuts Music praising it. Faker toured with Children Collide and E.L.F., and appeared at major festivals. In 2009, they supported Pink on her Australian tour.
In 2010–2011, they released demos and a new single "Dangerous" via SoundCloud. Their final album, Get Loved, was released for free in December 2011. In 2013, Nathan Hudson announced the band had split.
In October 2020, Faker announced they were reforming and working on a new album in São Paulo, Brazil, aiming for a 2022 return.
